Embraer Selects PowerFLOW to Develop Quieter eVTOL Aircraft for Eve Air Mobility

In a significant step toward the future of urban air mobility, Dassault Systèmes and Embraer have teamed up to leverage cutting-edge simulation technology to optimize Eve Air Mobility’s electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The collaboration utilizes Dassault Systèmes’ PowerFLOW, which have been instrumental in improving the aerodynamics and aeroacoustics of the aircraft’s propellers. This approach enhances performance and minimizes noise, a critical factor for eVTOLs operating in urban environments.

Virtual Testing for Real-World Results

Dassault Systèmes’ SIMULIA PowerFLOW application plays a key role in predicting how the eVTOL will behave under real-world operating conditions. By creating a virtual environment for the aircraft, Embraer and Eve Air Mobility’s engineering teams can conduct detailed simulations of flight performance and sound emission. This enables the team to test and refine the aircraft’s design, accelerating development while ensuring it meets stringent noise reduction requirements.
David Ziegler, Vice President of Aerospace & Defense Industry at Dassault Systèmes, highlighted the importance of minimizing noise in eVTOL designs: “eVTOL aircraft offer a more sustainable alternative to traditional combustion-powered aircraft. But since they are meant to operate in cities, reducing noise is crucial. Our fluid dynamics applications help optimize the most critical aspects of their design in a virtual setting.”

Collaborative Innovation for Urban Air Mobility

Embraer and Eve have consistently pushed boundaries in Urban Air Mobility (UAM) by working with global partners on reliable, affordable, and sustainable solutions. Eve Air Mobility is poised to revolutionize UAM with their human-centric design philosophy that prioritizes the safety, comfort, and accessibility of both passengers and pilots. Additionally, minimizing the noise impact on surrounding communities is a core focus of the project.

Micael Gianini, Senior Manager of Interiors, Noise, and Vibration at Embraer, emphasized the value of Dassault Systèmes’ technology in accelerating development: “Numerical models validated against experimental results have shown impressive accuracy and have significantly helped streamline the product definition process.”

Looking Ahead: Production and Testing

In a recent announcement, Embraer and Eve revealed that Eve’s first eVTOL production facility will be located in Taubaté, Brazil. The assembly of the first full-scale prototype is already underway, with a comprehensive test campaign scheduled for 2024. Eve’s eVTOL is expected to enter the market in 2026, marking a major milestone in the future of urban air transportation.
