GM’s vehicle dynamics and load simulation engineer, Ameya Apte, points out that leaf springs offer countless configurations and present unique challenges in modeling due to the articulation and friction between leaves. To tackle this, Apte’s team leveraged Simpack to create a customizable, parameter-based tool that supports various leaf spring configurations for different vehicle types.
Simpack’s Unique Advantages
GM’s tool development was supported by SIMULIA’s technical and R&D teams, but the true game-changer was Simpack’s solver. Known for its stability and high performance, Simpack’s solver allowed GM to confidently simulate complex interactions in a way that few other tools could match. Apte and his team noted that the solver’s robustness minimized the need for extensive adjustments, allowing them to focus on understanding and optimizing the physics of their models.
“With Simpack, you practically do not have to modify solver parameters to get a model to run,” Apte explained. “That robust solver is very useful because it allows us to look at the results, understand the physics happening behind them, and then send the model out to our design engineers.”
